Becoming a tutor at Otago University in 2013 triggered Vanessa's personal passion for vocal health and the development of artists beginning their careers or wanting to expand their understanding of healthy vocal practices.

Vanessa continues to teach and mentor many new and upcoming artists under her teaching and production business Vocal Mechanics, developing artists as they move forward in their careers in the performing arts, developing healthy practices to last a lifetime.

“It’s really lovely to be coming back to my home roots, to help the next generation of Performing Artist on their journey, especially from the unique and beautiful Lopdell House. My childhood was spent building huts, climbing trees and rowing boats about French Bay.

Many wonderful memories, as well as being the birth place of my performance career. From singing/songwriting and learning instruments at Titirangi Primary School, to learning flute with Elizabeth Hurst down South Titirangi Road, to performing recitals, as well as Theatre at Lopdell House, to chatting with Billy T James at the local dairy, as my school friends and I spent our bus money on lollies and walked home through the bush tracks”.
