Joyland (R15)

2024 | 2h 6m | Drama | Pakistan (subtitles)

Friday 18 October, 10.30am, 5.30pm & 8.15pm

The film was the first film from Pakistan to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and after the film screened, it received an eight minute standing ovation, and won the festival’s Grand Jury Prize.

The Ranas - a happily patriarchal joint family - yearn for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line. Their youngest son secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story slowly illuminates the entire Rana family's desire for sexual rebellion.

With stunning honesty that's achingly bittersweet, Joyland tackles gender and sexual fluidity in a repressed patriarchal society with wisps of hopefulness. (98% Rotten Tomatoes)

Thanks to peerless acting by the whole cast, the director's sensitivity, and the beautiful cinematography, we are drawn deep into the characters' lives as they respond to the push and pull of love in all its guises. What a wonderful film, and what a debut from the director. (Variety Review)
